THE STORY OF THE HEBREWS SCRIPTURE SONGS PROJECT

To hear samples of Hebrews Scripture Songs, click here. The Hebrews scripture songs project began when God put a desire in me (Alicia) to write longer passages of Scripture to music. I had written single verses to teach the girls in Bible Club, but because I like to memorize in context, I decided to try writing to a whole book. What book? I wanted to memorize Hebrews, and reasoned that if I could write scripture songs to the entire book of Hebrews, then I could do anything. Why not jump right in and start big? So I began, verse by verse, to weave music to the inspirationally rich doctrines and promises of this benchmark book.

One by one, day by day, I plugged away. Sometimes I skipped a few days, but I knew that I would always come back and start where I left off. It was just a little hobby, done strictly for my own memorizational benefit. Unbenownst to me at the time, it was the start of the Hebrews scripture song project.

It was about a year into writing Hebrews, and I was on chapter 10, when the Romans project materialized. I took a break from the Hebrews in order to write music for Romans 6, 7 & 8. This was the first time I had tried writing music for several verses in one sitting. I was able to finish the last chapters of the Hebrews having refined my approach to writing scripture music.

A year after the Romans CD was finished and advertised on this website, in the summer of 2007, we were driving to Ohio, and I was a little discouraged. Things were getting off to slow start with the website. We had had hardly any sales. I felt overwhelmed with the responsibilities of writing, producing, AND marketing. Marketing especially. I pondered to the Lord if I should just give up on the Songs of Scripture idea. My big dreams when starting were to create a way to support myself while off in another country taking care of orphans, or something of the sort. I was beginning to realize that this dream was not going to happen without hard and dedicated work----and help. More help than I could afford to pay. I had no money, and no technical expertise. Perhaps there was a faster way to get to the mission field? Go visit a missionary somewhere? Which one? How to choose? How does one know if that's what God wants them to do? These were my thoughts on that day, driving to Ohio.

Our cell phone rang. It was a bright and cheery voice, asking an ordering question about the Romans CD. How did she get my phone number? I thought I had taken it off the website several months earlier. She asked if I had produced the book of Hebrews. No, I am out of money. "Well, you should take a missions trip to Chiapas. We have a student orchestra down here and we can help you." Help me? What kind of missionaries can help me produce the Hebrews scripture songs?

I made inquiries and found out that the Terrell family lives and works in Mexico, producing audio recordings of indigenous language translations of the Scriptures. They also dub the Jesus movie, and other Bible movies, into the different Indian languages of Chiapas. A year later, I was on my way to Chiapas, and Renee Terrell and I launched the Hebrews scripture songs project. Praise to our God, who delights to give us the desires of our hearts!
